2008 RUF CTR 3

Porsche builds some of the finest sports cars in the world, but without the Carrera GT, the brand doesn’t currently have a wild, world-beating exotic. Apparently RUF, a highly regarded aftermarket Porsche tuner, saw that gap in the market, so it went ahead and built its own.

The RUF CTR 3 may have taillights from a Cayman, and yes, it is based on a 911 chassis, but this is no normal Porsche. The CTR 3 uses a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter pumping out 700 hp–over 200 hp more than a 911 Turbo–and 656 lb-ft of torque. The car’s 0-to-62 mph figure of 3.2 seconds is just a few tenths faster than that of the aforementioned 911 Turbo’s, but the CTR 3 is capable of a tear-inducing 235

2008 Porsche Cayenne Transsiberia Rally SUV

By Stuart Fowle

It’s a question no one would ever think to ask, but Porsche has answered it. If a 911 GT3 were to have a wild night with a military-spec Humvee, what would the resulting baby look like? Enter the Cayenne Transsiberia rally edition you see here. Following a very successful performance by two privately-owned and modified Cayennes in last year’s rally, Porsche is putting a full factory effort behind this year’s event. Twenty-six special models will be built, all painted either silver or black with orange wheels, graphics, and detailing. They’ll be loaded up with Porsche’s whole arsenal of electronics, including

Lagerfeld shoots Audi R8 for owners-only calendar

The Audi R8 buildup continues apace. The flagship sports car has been featured at design expos, been featured in magazines (automotive and otherwise), and has established itself as an object of desire for many. Today, the automaker announced that famed designer Karl Lagerfeld photographed the mid-engined machine in France, and that the fashion designer will present his work May 12 at the Audi Forum in Manhattan. The photos, a sampling of which are in the enclosed gallery, are all done in black-and-white and show the R8 in a stylized, abstract form. Lagerfeld used mirrors (as you can see in the photo above) to create this unique imagery.

In addition to being displayed gallery-style at the Audi Forum, the work will also be featured in an exclusive calendar that will be made available only to new R8 owners. If you\’re not one of the 300 US customers who\’ll… Read the rest of this entry

First Drive: 2007 Hyundai Veracruz

 Vehicle Reviews         No comments

Back in January at the Detroit Auto Show, Hyundai finally peeled the camo off its newest product, the Veracruz. The Veracruz is aimed right at the heart of the increasingly popular mid-sized crossover segment that includes such perennial best sellers as the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander and new entries like the Saturn Outlook and Ford Edge. Hyundai identifies the Honda and Toyota entries as their main competitors, but interestingly neither was their primary benchmark. That honor falls to the Lexus RX350. More on that in a bit.

Hyundai invited a group of automotive media to a park in northern Oakland County north of Chrysler\’s headquarters for a first drive of the new Veracruz. We set out on a cool rainy morning in a fleet of new vehicles in various trim levels and front- and all-wheel drive configurations. We only had about an hour and a half… Read the rest of this entry

Diving into Spring Mountain Motorsport Ranch\’s tight turn 2, the Porsche 911 Carrera S nips under the Ferrari F430. A silver scimitar suddenly splits the red haze. Porsche and Ferrari are natural foes–always have been, always will be. But will the sports car elite drift wide to make room for an Audi R8 that\’s only recently set its Pirellis on American pavement? We\’re in Nevada to find out.

Like the meteorite that recently holed a New Jersey home, the R8 is heaven-sent. The four-rings brand has never done a sports car. Never mind the five Le Mans victories by the racing car with the same name; open-cockpit endurance racers are a touch hairy for a romantic driving weekend in wine

C-class tunage: Kicherer K35 CS

 Vehicle Reviews         No comments

For some people in the market for a hairy-chested C-Class, the AMG-fettled C63 and any Brabus option will be too obvious. For them it\’s Kircherer to the rescue, with its new C-Class sledgehammer, the K35 CS.

Kircherer has upped the antes on both the gasoline and diesel engines. The C350 gets bumped up 34 hp to 306, with 280 lb-ft of twist, while the C320 CDI jumps up 46 hp to 270 hp, with 443 lb-ft of churning power. That means you can get your diesel C from 0-60 in 6.9 seconds while getting respectable if not stellar gas mileage.

Outside, the cosmetic changes certainly do their part to give the new C an attitude worthy of Hitman, starting with the lightweight, handmade, 19-inch RS-1 wheels, with the ride saved from low-profile oblivion by thicker stabilizer bars and height-adjustable dampers. In the rear, a new diffuser… Read the rest of this entry

No Sketches, Actual spy photos of BMW X6 appear

 Vehicle Reviews         No comments

No bogus photochopped sketches this time: Real-life spy photos of a lightly-camouflaged BMW X6 prototype have surfaced. For the first time, there are interior shots, and the back seat image clearly shows the sloping rear roofline. The X6 is expected to have a similar range of gasoline-powered six and eight-cylinder powerplants and diesel-fueled six-cylinder engines to the X5, and should finally show up at the Frankfurt show in September. The roof-mounted wing is a particularly nice touch!

Abt set to tune Audi R8

Abt Sportsline, the winning DTM racer and largest tuner for VW group cars, has released renderings of its Abt R8, an ubercoupe meant to challenge Maranello’s F430, Porsche’s 911 Turbo, and it’s own cousin, the Lamborghini Gallardo.

Under the carbon fiber hood installed to lighten things up and maintain optimal weight distribution, Abt has bolted a supercharger onto the 4.2L V8 to scare up another 110 hp, for a final tally of 530. Four-wheel-drive through 20-inch wheels will blast it from 0-62 mph in 3.9 seconds and all the way to 197 mph — the kind of catapulting that would be sure to peel the gold and burnt copper paint jobs right off those renderings. The monster will even come with an adjustable suspension (height, pressure, and rebound) so you can be just as comfy pulling into the valet as you are at… Read the rest of this entry
