2008 Lexus LX 570

Lexus finally refreshes its large LX sport utility for 2008, giving it powetrain sourced from Toyota\’s Tundra.

2008 Lexus LX 570
NEW YORK: Luxury liner sources power from Tundra

More power, goals of better on- and off-road capabilities and increased interior room highlight the 2008 Lexus LX 570 premiering in New York. Power, from the 5.7-liter, 381-hp V8 developed for parent company Toyota’s full-size Tundra, jumps 113 hp over the outgoing LX 470.

The Tundra’s six-speed automatic is also part of the new powertrain package. Electrohydraulic suspension and active height control reduce body roll and increase on-road comfort. Off-road abilities should benefit from increased wheel travel, crawl… Read the rest of this entry

2008 Dodge Avenger

By Gavin Conway

Dodge figures the full-size Charger’s styling will work just as well on a mid-size car. And so we have the Avenger, which basically looks like a three-quarter-scale Charger. Mechanically, the Avenger is a twin to the Chrysler Sebring sedan, sharing its underpinnings and powertrains. And like the Sebring, the Avenger hopes to out-value the Honda Accord, the Nissan Altima, and the Ford Fusion. To that end, the Avenger starts at$18,895–$1605 less than an outgoing Stratus but with $985 more content.

The Avenger’s cabin is spacious enough for two six-foot, two-inch occupants to sit one behind the other in comfort. Perceived quality is a

2008 Ford Escape

By Jason Cammisa

Youth triumphs in all things automotive, just as it does in the wider world. So, after a new model debuts, we’ve come to expect a freshening in year three, a special edition in year four, and an all-new model after five years.

Not so at Ford. The Escape, for instance, was introduced in 2001 and by all rights is due for a full overhaul. But instead, it’s getting a face-lift plus. Think of it as a face-lift plus a tummy tuck and a butt-lift. Its appearance is completely revised, but much of what’s underneath remains the same.

Luckily, the Escape has good bones. The 2008 Escape retains the previous model’s neutral handling balance, stiff structure, and good ride, because it also retains its

2008 Porsche Cayenne

By Sam Smith

So, there I am, ripping down a Spanish autovia, twin-turbo V-8 wailing away, wind whistling past the roof rails. There I am, downshifting through a roundabout, flat-footing that direct-injected lump and using errant Peugeots as apexes (???Si, policia! Un Porsche grande!???). There I am, doing 150 mph. And not having very much fun.

How did we get here? Ten years ago, sport-utility vehicles didn??™t walk all over sports cars, and it was impossible not to have a good time in a Porsche. Since then, we??™ve watched a host of manufacturers build apex-inhaling, racetrack-lapping trucks, and we??™ve seen most of those trucks prove an important maxim: capability and sheer speed aren??™t always everything.

In spite of its impressive performance and record-setting sales, the first-generation
